Unquera, June 10

The stage is officially from Comillas (which means quotation marks in Spanish) to Colombres, 29 K.  But I am housed in Unquera, a couple of Ks shy of Colombres.  This seemed fine as it was a long day, but the accommodation is a mile away from the route, so nothing saved there.  Tomorrow is a long day, too—there are lots of long days—and again, the hotel is a mile from anywhere except the highway.  OK, back to today´s digs because they are worth talking about.  So I get to the place and a guy with very few teeth shows me upstairs, I see my suitcase, he tells me that breakfast is at 9:00, how to access the wi-fi, y ya (and that´s it).  I walk into this sort of living room and kitchen all done in shabby let´s say 50´s style where there are two large lemons on the sink.  There is the oddest assortment of utensils in the kitchen, for example, a stove but no pots or pans, a colander, several spatulae (sorry, couldn´t resist!), and to reach the plates, you have to stand on the garbage pail.  It is nice to have the space and all, a sofa for sitting and a table on which to put your stuff, but there is no place to eat, so what do people who do not stop at the Lupa in town to buy tuna, lettuce, cherries and bread and already have tomatoes, cheese, butter and other foodstuffs in their maleta (suitcase) if they are without a car?  And once I am on a roll I will tell about the shower:  it has one of those great big fancy shower heads and a little hand held one only the nice great big one is not connected.  It is OK.  There was hot water.  It is just a strange place.

Anyway, the walk.  Lots of beautiful scenery, but almost all on pavement, not the scenery, the surface underfoot.

This dog is doing the Camino, for real.  See his little paniers?  His human went in to the store to stock up on supplies while he is taking a much needed rest from his exertions.

A bright patch of nasturtiums by the side of the road:

Let´s just say that he´s the dad:

Just by the way, let me tell you that one of the problems with the pavement-type stretches is that it can be very hard to find a place to pee!
