July 15, Newbridge to Oxford

Properly forewarned, I made it down the fire escape without a hitch, and hit the trail.  Pretty much the same as yesterday's walk only it was a little bit shorter and it did not rain despite the prediction:

Maybe delete POLITE ?

Two people working a lock and having a bit of a tiff!

People put all sorts of things on top of their boats:

Oxford is not like Cambridge.  It is a bustling city bursting with tourists, so many you would think you were in New York around Christmas time.  There is competition for sidewalk space, but that may bc because this is a Saturday in summer.  I had no trouble finding my hotel, which is not really a hotel at all, but an upscale Oxford residence through the year rented out to visitors in summer.  You know how lots of hotel rooms look fabulous in their booking.com photos but in real life do not quite live up the airbrushed adverts?  This place, The Turl Street Mitre is the opposite.  It is way nicer than I imagined, not luxurious in terms of fabrics or anything like that, but super comfortable, spacious, simple, well lit, everything you need and nothing you don't.

On the way to the room:

Right next door is The Scriptum, a shoppe that sells the most divine papers, pens, books, journals, masks, a whole mix of things that are, sadly, so not today.  The tiny shoppe was packed.

Here are a few samples of their wares:

Then next door to that shoppe is a huge indoor market.  My favorite stall was the one selling flowers:

There were lots of terrific food options.  There are lots of terrific food options everywhere around here, it seems.

But let's not neglect the important things.  First you get your glasses and then you get your eyes tested!  That is so smart!

In the pedestrian section, I learned about Judgment Day from a guy with a megaphone yelling about it:

There was the most wonderful street singer-artist!

Everyone was singing and dancing!

Working the crowd!

an upbeat introduction to my three-night stay.
