Due to yesterday's exertions, I slept until 5:15 a.m., then had my usual in-room breakfast, did some chores—don't ask what, I don't even remember—went for a walk, and waited for Alex and Alex to be ready to head off to Broadway Tower and a tour of the Nuclear Bunker. As an add-on, we visited the Gordon Russel Design Museum, conveniently located about fifty steps from our hotel. Before I turn you over to the Alexes who are sure to delight enlighten you with their detailed descriptions of the day, I want to say something about Gordon Russell: among his many accomplishments, was his innovation to mechanize the production of furniture. The result was not an Ikea looking dresser or sideboard but rich, softly polished finishes that exploit the grain of the wood to imbue the simplest design with interest and warmth. You can see for yourself how effective he was.
I just read Alex's account of the walk from Flyford Flavell to Pershore and you would think that she and Alex went on an entirely different walk than I did. Since this was to be their first lengthy trek, and I was having such a hard time with the fields. high grasses, thistles, thorns, route-finding difficulties, fences and what not, I thought they were going to kill me for sending them off on the walk from Hell, but to my relieved surprise they actually enjoyed it.
