Castellar de la Frontera, June 1 and 2

The Mariposa Monarca (Monarch Butterfly walk) is THE walk to walk when you are in this area.  Its reputation is well deserved, so I was lucky to be able to do it in both directions.

It is a beautiful river walk:

where, yes, Monarch Butterflies do fly, but not until late morning when it is warm enough:

Here is a good place to read about monarch butterflies:

And, if you can find it, watch the movie, La Lengua de las Mariposas, which is not about butterflies except for a teeny tiny bit.

The walk was not difficult.  For example, when you had to cross a stream, it was like this:

There was a first; a gate that you did not open, nor did you climb over or scoot under it, you went clear through the middle, like a phantasm:

Also, there was a curiosity, half a canoe in one place:

And half about 1/4 mile away:

A proposition: maybe it had to do with the ice age, since now the river is too shallow, and, in some places, too rocky for a canoe, or maybe people portaging had a big fight.  Or who knows!

This is the entrance to :

June 02.  A nice, long walk, made longer perhaps by my repeating one section unwittingly.  It can happen!

Part was along narrow, overgrown paths full of thorns and thistles, which means lots of scratches and a torn T shirt (my favorite).

Part was along a canal, reminiscent of The Great Glen Way:

which contained large, green islands of moss and algae (?) that swirled about:

Part was was along sandy paths through a forest of cork trees:

There was a horse:

Issue:  When a horse is blocking your path and has no intention of moving, do you try to get past it at its head-end or its tail-end?

And a cow.   With an attitude!

But the most interesting sight was a dung beetle pushing its burden:
