June 15 Wotton-Under-Edge to Dursley

Another early start and what did I see?

which, if I am not mistaken, grow in profusion in Golden Gate Park, but not exclusively, of course.

This was a sad site:

Lots of trees being cut down taking turning beautiful spaces into open waste.

Ahoy, person on horse coming the other way!

Passing through a town, I saw two notable sights.

This:

And this:

Imagining a conversation:  "Can you give me your address, please?"  "Yes, 123 The Street."  "Very good, madam, but could you tell me which street?"  "The Street."  "Yes, but what is the name of the street?"  How this back and forth would resolve, one can only guess.

THE sight of the day for sure was The Tyndale Monument

It can be seen for miles around—oh, and you can pay to have it lit up for special occasions, and yes, you can go through that little door and climb to the top; I was not tempted.   Isn't it nice that three hundred years after strangling Tyndale and burning him at the stake in 1536 for the heretical act of translating some of the TaNaKh and the Greek Scriptures into English, the powers that be had a change of heart and built this monument to say we are very sorry, very sorry, indeed.  (Sources Tyndale used for his translation are unclear despite the defensive nature of this article as there is no evidence that he had any exposure to Hebrew.  His Latin and Greek were up to the mark for sure.)

Like many towns around, Dursley has a one street down-town, but it has a Sainsbury's which is the best of the chain supermercados. A good grocery store makes my day....and dinner, too!
